5:00PM – SUNDAY, APRIL 22 , 2018

The Filipino-American Spirit, Inc. (FAS) is proud to present the Leyte Dance Theater (LDT) in the only Carolinas stop of the 2017 LDT North American tour. The show, entitled “Salida: Simbolo at Kultura”, will be held at 5:00 PM on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the Oasis Shriners hall in Charlotte.

The much-acclaimed dance group is returning to the Carolinas after a well-received show in 2014, during which they raised funds to help rebuild its Philippine hometown of Tacloban, which was damaged by Typhoon Haiyan.

Known for successfully combining folk movements with ballet and contemporary forms, LDT has gained a following among dance enthusiasts and has become famous for their distinct interpretations of popular Filipino dances such as the singkil and tinikling. Audiences look forward to their exquisite performances, marked by creative choreography, dazzling costumes, and flawless execution, as demonstrated in the sarimanok, a dance celebrating a colourful mythical bird.

The 24-member dance company is considered one of the best in the Philippines. The new repertoire will showcase different regions of the Philippines. Carolinas audiences will enjoy the distinctive style of dance interpretation for which LDT has become famous. LDT has performed all over the world, and has represented the Philippines in many international dance festivals and competitions. In 2013, the prestigious Aliw Awards Foundation awarded LDT a “Lifetime Achievement Award” in the field of Performing Arts.

In 2017, LDT founder and Artistic Director Jess de Paz was honoured by the C-MAP Festival Internationale with a National Award for Mentoring. The driving force behind LDT, de Paz trained under both Filipino and US mentors. He was a scholar at the Joffrey School of Ballet in New York, and returned to the Philippines to become one of the leading mentors and creators in Philippine dance. He has instilled rigor and discipline in his dancers in order to establish a well-respected professional company. His fusion of ballet and contemporary dance forms provides the engine for the company’s creativity to capture in movement, or to suspend in tableaux, what is profound and sublime to subjects that Filipinos warmly identify with — stories and legends, historical accounts and current events, steeped in indigenous humor and values.
